Jáchymov
Jáchymov lies at the foot of the Krušné Mountains, not far from the Czech-German border (approximately 20 km from Karlovy Vary and 7 km from the Boží Dar – Oberwiesenthal border crossing). Originally a mining community, the town soon expanded and became the biggest town in the kingdom. In 1533, the local population was 18 000 people. In the beginning, silver was mined here and coins called Tolars were stamped here. Layer, Jáchymov became famous mainly thanks to the discovery of radium that was obtained from uranium oxide. Not only Jáchymov but the whole world is grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Curie for the pioneer find. Today, Jáchymov is mainly a spa town. Most of the therapeutic procedures offered here exploit mineral and radioactive springs and help those with locomotive disorders.
